FAMILY TIES

On the road again, this time up into the Berkshires and on to Exeter, NH, arriving around noon at the midpoint of a sunny and warm late summer day.  After stocking up at a local Lindt chocolate outlet shop (yummy!), we checked into a rather posh Hampton Inn, then headed out for lunch at the Green Bean, a local sandwich shop with a nicely shaded front courtyard.

Exeter was once home to three different families directly related to Heidi: the Paul Martins, the David Merrills and the Richard Lawrences.  The Martins and the Merrills were on the paternal side; the Lawrences, the maternal.  And many a happy summer visit brought family visits to all the Exeter relatives.

Currently, interestingly enough, representatives of two of the three are still in the area.  After lunch we walked around to the local Congregational Church where Heidi's Uncle Paul Martin was once pastor.  The church offices are now located in what was then the parsonage, so we were able to poke around there as well.

Then we dropped in to visit briefly with Heidi's Cousin John Martin's wife, Karen, a few blocks away (We'll see both John and Karen for breakfast tomorrow.) before driving out to Langton Place to see Aunt Free for a good (if somewhat circular) conversation.

Later we had dinner (and lots of more good conversation) with Heidi's Cousin Dede (Free's daughter) and her husband Rod at their country summer home nearby -- which made for a very pleasant conclusion to a nice, if busy, day.
